Why elephants never forget - Alex Gendler TED/ED

Elephants as a general rule are very noble creatures. They are herbivores and mainly live in peace with others. When they reach maturity, their stature alone deters most predators. They are also noted for having very think skin, it takes quite a bit to breach it’s hide and serves to protect them from irritating outside forces. Elephants are known for several things but most notably for protecting their weak and helpless.

When an attack to the herd is projected, the matriarch of the herd gives out a call to others for help. While others arrive to strengthen the herd, they surround their weak and helpless putting a strong barrier between the assailant and the those that cannot protect themselves. In short, the strongest shield the weak and project a “you don’t want to fuck with us” wall.

This gives the young a chance to reach maturity, and the injured the opportunity to heal. Elephants like people, separate as the family’s grow but come back together for support, guidance, and strength. The lead in an elephant herd is called the matriarch these are elder women that have experience and practice caring for others. Through the years they communicate with other herds/families even after separation. Smaller family groupings with weaker matriarchies are known to follow a herd with a strong matriarch to glean from her wisdom. The matriarch will also call other herds or families to help when it is needed.

My recovery has been over years, in stages and with help. Reaching out to those that are there for us is not being needy. One day you too, could be the matriarch in the lead.

[ Elephants and Bee’s – there is a belief that elephants are afraid of bees. If you think of the last time you heard a bee buzz, and look at the size of an elephants ear… I don’t think it’s fear.]
